Sunderland Restaurant Week Top 10 picks

From the corners of the Orient to the delights of the Middle East, from the best of British to the “small plates” of the Mediterranean – whatever your taste in cuisine, we in Sunderland certainly like to eat!

With the city’s third restaurant week just around the corner (9 – 16 September) we’re looking forward to another opportunity to try out the very best Sunderland has to offer.

And if last time is anything to go by, we’re not afraid to go on a culinary adventure and try the food from across the globe.

Here’s our top 10 * from the last Restaurant Week, held in March.

(*based on number of vouchers downloaded).

ASIANA

The number one dining out choice from Restaurant Week participants, who clearly love the fact that they get a true taste of the East under one roof. Chinese, Thai, Malaysian, Indonesian and Vietnamese dishes are all on them menu.

ARABESQUE

Indulge in the cuisine of the Middle East – and Egypt in particular – at Arabesque. Generous sharing plates, authentic tagines, charcoal grilled specials. The only thing missing is a view of the Pyramids.

FAT BUDDHA

More Far Eastern specials – this time at the Fat Buddha. Right on the seafront, enjoy the cuisines of all the countries in the Orient with a huge selection of dishes – a great excuse to return!

THE COFFIN CLUB (NOW MEAT UP BAR AND GRILL)

The name may have changed but that doesn’t mean that you can’t still enjoy this fantastic menu – one for carnivores everywhere. Generous portions and even some options for veggies so they don’t miss out.

D’ACQUA

A firm favourite in Sunderland, this stylish restaurant offers a range of top notch Italian, French and English fayre so it’s not surprising its high position on our top 10 list.

KARBON GRILL

Steaks, ribs, burgers, seafood – you name it, it’s on the Karbon Grill’s menu. Situated at the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel, this is the perfect choice for anyone who likes generous, well cooked, no nonsense grub.

PAPAS TAPAS

Craving those holiday food treats? Then enjoy a taste of the Med at Papas Tapas. The restaurant offers a whole host of options for those who want to share – or those who want to keep their favourite foods to themselves. Either way there’s plenty of delicious choices.

BARNETT’S

Comfort food cooked by a chef – could you ask for anything more? Not surprising then that Barnett’s has made it into the top 10 with its crowd pleasing offerings covering everything from steak and ale pie to slow cooked belly pork.

THE CHOP HOUSE

If you like steak and plenty of it then this is the place to go. Renowned for its meaty special, luckily the menu contains a whole host of delicious offerings from veggie to fish dishes.

LIBERTY BROWN

Pizzas, gourmet burgers, pasta, grills and even salads for the health conscious – you name it and Liberty Brown has it on their menu. Family friendly too, so a great excuse for a trip out for everyone.
